Tris is a white crystal or powder. Soluble in ethanol and water, slightly soluble in ethyl acetate and benzene, insoluble in ether and carbon tetrachloride, corrosive and irritating chemicals to copper and aluminum.

Tris is often used as a biological buffer and is often prepared with pH values of 6.8, 7.4, 8.0, 8.8.

The pH value changes greatly with temperature. Generally speaking, the pH value decreases by 0.03 for each degree of temperature rise.
